Retaliating against breast cancer…

Hayley (31), Sally (52, 56), Jodie (32), Fiona (39), Bianca (33), Linda (49, 61), & Shonel (39).

These are just a few of the women in our community who have battled breast cancer. Sadly, a few of these names are now memories…

These women have, or had, families. The number/s in brackets following each name is the age/s at which they were diagnosed.

The only way to develop more effective treatments for breast cancer, and prevent suffering for future generations is through clinical research.

The Casey Wolves BMX Club wanted to be sure the funds received from the special Breast Cancer Clubby that is to be hosted in May 2023 will be going to the right place… specifically, to someone who will use the funds to help find a cure, and especially to go towards making a difference to metastatic breast cancer treatments.

After lots of inquiries the Club found Associate Professor Delphine Merino, who is Head of the Tumour Progression and Heterogeneity Laboratory at the Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI).

Not only did the club find A/Prof Merino, but a couple of volunteer club members then drove out to Heidelberg to meet her and tour the facility!

Sadly, when there, we learnt that only 10% of funding comes from the government. The rest is from grants and donations. To put this into perspective… a drug called Neratanib is approximately $40,000. When A/Prof Merino’s lab uses a this drug on cancerous cells in the lab, they have to pay for it! (That is just a tiny portion of what these guys do).

Our Breast Cancer Clubby will be held on Saturday 27th May 2023 at Casey BMX Club.

We want to make this a big one! We want as many riders and spectators as possible to come from far and wide! We want to raise as much money as we can for this really amazing researcher and her lab!!

Let’s get the BMX community behind our mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and grandmothers. Let’s do everything we can to put the brakes on breast cancer!
