About the position

The Laboratory and Facilities team sits within the Professional Services team which provides timely and efficient research support services to our cancer researchers to enable them to focus on and get the best out of their research.

To provide our researchers with optimal support, we are seeking to recruit a passionate and experienced Assistant Laboratory Manager to work with the Laboratory & Facilities Manager and the rest of the team in the efficient and effective management of the research facilities of the ONJCRI. This includes the areas of Workplace Health & Safety, general laboratory support, chemical & biological safety, and Purchasing and Inventory Management. The Assistant Laboratory Manager will have the opportunity to identify risk and facilitate necessary change throughout the organisation, to ensure compliance and best practice is delivered.

Key responsibilities include:

Workplace Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with WH&S legislation and best practice
  • Update and maintain laboratory health and safety-related documentation
  • Secretary of ONJCRI Workplace Health and Safety Committee
  • Incident reporting management and risk mitigation
  • Deliver annual laboratory safety training
  • Undertake regular health, safety and audits in the laboratory and develop corrective action plans.
  • Be responsible for local storage and tracking of high-risk materials
  • Advise and provide training on standard and specialty research equipment for users

Laboratory Management and Operations

  • Maintain Cell Bank Freezer Pro database and train users
  • Provide advice to users to develop and maintain high quality operating protocols, standard operating procedures and risk assessments.
  • Act as a primary contact to support laboratory users procuring, storing, using and ultimately disposing of chemicals, biological and/or other hazardous materials.
  • Monitor chemical inventories in laboratories, including inventory management, monitoring quantities stored against maximum allowable quantities, performing periodic stock takes and waste disposal
  • Monitor standard and specialty consumable needs and ensure sufficient stocks are maintained.
  • Support laboratory certification and licensing processes (for example PC2 requirements, scheduled drugs and poisons, or radiation certifications)
  • Participation in on-call emergency roster

About you

The successful candidate will have substantial experience in the operation and support of either laboratory facilities or manufacturing/production facilities in an industry with similar technical requirements or may currently be a researcher who also has responsibility for management of their own lab area.

This role will require someone with demonstrable organisational and time management skills and the ability to effectively negotiate and communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and practices as well laboratory compliance and legislative and government regulations is a must. Experience with purchasing systems such as Workplace Requisition would be advantageous.
