About the opportunity

The Communications and Marketing function sits within the wider Research Support team, providing expert, timely and efficient services to our cancer researchers to enable them to focus on and get the best out of their research.

This is an exciting and varied role which is responsible for refining and implementing the Institute’s communications strategy to drive reputational awareness, foster community engagement and to support major revenue and supporter growth for its research.

The successful incumbent will work with a range of internal and external stakeholders including the Executive, Program Leaders, researchers, fundraising staff, media outlets, the communications teams of our key partners (Austin Health and La Trobe University), and the broader community.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, with close working relations with the Senior Fundraising Manager and the Senior Project Manager – Strategy and Impact, key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement an external communications strategy to raise public awareness of the Institute in regard to its reputation, researchers and breakthrough medical research. This includes development and execution of a social media strategy;
  • Plan and implement an internal communications strategy to increase staff engagement and support effective disbursement of information throughout the institute;
  • Review and update the ONJCRI website structure and content;
  • Management, writing & editing of the Annual Report
  • Manage and respond to media and public relations enquiries including the preparation of media release as required.
  • Support the Senior Fundraising Manager through creation of a range of fundraising collateral;
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for internal and external communications; and
  • Develop and monitor an Institute Style Guide for all internal and external communications to ensure the integrity of our image and identity.

About you

To excel in this role, you will be an accomplished and impactful story teller with strong written skills and the ability to adapt writing to suit a diverse range of audiences.  You will be responsible for driving communication effectively through a variety of channels including; web, print, social and media relations.

Key to the success of the role your ability to develop and deliver value added marketing and communications initiatives to drive success and growth in fundraising income.

Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, marketing or public relations or an allied discipline together with subsequent relevant work experience; or extensive experience and management expertise in Internal and External Communications is required.
