About the position:

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (the Institute) is embarking on a visionary business transformation to capitalise on our well-regarded cancer research programs, genomic and single cell sequencing platforms, patient bio-banking and multi-platform capability. In strengthening our position as a leading translational focused cancer research institute, this exciting opportunity will focus on enhanced translation and commercialisation of the Institute’s research outputs, promoting the successful linking of research discoveries with commercial and translation outcomes.

This dynamic role will report to the Chief Operating Officer and work closely and collaboratively with our Researchers and our Legal Office.

You will be responsible for:

  • Development of business cases for commercialisation opportunities that align with the Institute’s purpose, strategic objectives and research strategy;
  • Proactively developing productive, professional relationships with key stakeholders with a focus on identifying commercial and clinical collaborations;
  • Assessing technology transfer opportunities from researchers and their collaborators to ensure intellectual property is appropriately captured, protected and commercialized;
  • Managing the negotiation and execution of material, data and reagent transfer agreements, collaboration agreements, confidentiality agreements, commercialisation, licensing and assignment agreements;
  • Identifying and supporting opportunities to secure development and industry funding;
  • Develop appropriate IP protection strategies together with researchers via invention disclosures, patents and trademarks to enhance IP capture, collaboration and licensing;
  • Ensuring pre-disclosure publication review (and appropriate IP protection), maintenance of publication records (Endnote) and publication dissemination/display;
  • Education of staff and students, and promotional awareness of IP capture, development, protection, management and commercialisation.

About you:

To succeed in this dynamic and interesting role you will have:

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate a culture of innovation and strategic thinking in commercialisation;
  • A proven record of developing strategic plans and business plans and delivering against agreed milestones with high scientific or research and development content;
  • A demonstrated track record in securing collaboration, licensing and technology agreements, including 2 years or more of biomedical industry experience in either biomedical product development, business development/commercialisation or technology transfer;
  • Proven agreement negotiation and drafting, including familiarity with IP related agreements and risk mitigation terms;
  • Strong understanding of technology discovery, development and commercialisation;
  • Experience in IP valuation methodologies and use in project and commercialisation decision making, including finance, costing and agreement negotiations;
  • Well-developed communication skills;
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (including Excel) and relevant customer relationship management platforms.

A PhD in a relevant biomedical discipline, with further research experience through post-doctoral or industry positions would be considered highly advantageous.
