We are excited to announce the arrival of a new Bioinformatics Laboratory at ONJCRI, led by Dr Quentin Gouil, a promising expert in genomic research.

This laboratory will play a central role in advancing our mission to revolutionise cancer care and overcome existing barriers to improving patient outcomes through genomics, artificial intelligence (AI), and interdisciplinary collaboration, with the goal of delivering more precise, personalised treatments for cancer patients.
A Vision for the Future of Cancer Treatment
Dr Gouil brings a wealth of experience in genomics (the study of genes and their functions – the “blueprint” inside cells that directs how they grow, develop and function). He has previously worked on plant genomes before transitioning to mammalian genomes, including human genomes associated with genetic diseases. At ONJCRI, his research will focus on understanding the genetic mechanisms behind cancer, aiming to improve how we analyse and apply genomic data to personalise cancer treatments.
“The combination of ONJCRI’s close ties to the Austin Hospital, its collaborative research culture, and strong connections with La Trobe University and Melbourne’s biomedical community makes it the ideal environment to make major scientific breakthroughs in cancer research that can quickly benefit patients,” says Dr Gouil.
Dr Gouil’s primary goal is to accelerate the use of personalised genomics in clinical practice, making genomic analyses faster and more routine. This will help doctors tailor cancer treatments based on each patient’s unique genetic profile, ultimately leading to more effective and personalised therapies.
“The increasing precision and scale of biological datasets allow us to get a much clearer picture of tumours,” he explains. “By optimising how we analyse and use this data, we can identify the best treatment options for each patient.”
A New Chapter in Cancer Research
Although Dr Gouil is new to cancer research, he is deeply motivated by the opportunity to apply his expertise to improving clinical outcomes. “Genomics offers huge potential to enhance human health, and I’m eager to contribute to better cancer outcomes,” he shares.
